When you take a new job in a business you are unfamiliar with, you will have to adapt by learning terms you didn’t know before. This is especially true in the logging business, where plenty of different terms describe the tools, jobs, and places involved. Read below to learn logging terminology everyone should know.

Logging Tools

You must learn the names of and use many tools to complete work in the logging industry. A “donkey” is a machine that pulls trees or logs to a landing. One of the components of the donkey is a “mainline,” which is the cable on its drums that pulls the logs from the area where loggers cut them.

Another tool is a “logging choker,” which is a sling that you put around the end of one or more logs so you can transport them to a landing. Attaching the choker to the mainline is known as “butt-rigging” since you will attach the rig to the butt of the log, which is the widest part of the cut portion.

Logging Jobs

Other elements of logging terminology everyone should know are the names of the jobs involved in the process. For example, you will refer to a person who cuts down trees as a “feller” since they are “felling” trees.

Another person to know is the “choker setter,” who attaches the chokers to the log. A “donkey puncher” operates the donkey machine. Finally, you should know the “hook tender” since they may oversee you as they manage the yarding of logs you move from the woods.

Important Places in Logging

You will need to know the names of locations if you want to work in the logging industry. The “landing” is the place where the logs go after you cut them and leave them before taking them to a work site.

Another site is the “log dump,” which is usually a body of water where you place the logs for sorting and storage before they go to a lumber mill. You may end up assembling the logs into rafts to move them to mills for processing.
