How To Properly Install Cable Rail Fittings

Even though it is relatively easy to install cable rail fittings, the process must be accurate to ensure safety and viability. In addition to safety features, all installation steps should follow local building codes for the demographic. Here are the proper steps to follow for basic cable rail installation.

Step 1: Marking the Posts

Before drilling and placing any rails or fittings, mark the locations with pencils to ensure accuracy. The drill holes should be roughly three inches apart, and the post markings should be marked every three feet. By completing this step, you guarantee every post and fitting has a home, and the spacing is concise.

Step 2: Drilling and Fitting

After the markings are complete, you are ready to drill the holes for each fitting. Drill all holes into the markings before inserting any fittings. That way, you’ll keep things clear, and any issues are easy to address. Insert the sleeves once the drilling is complete; use a hammer to ensure they are flush with the posts.

Step 3: Terminal Threading

The sleeves will allow a smooth connection for the threading terminals. You can thread the sleeves one at a time and attach the washers and nuts accordingly—refer to the manufacturer’s guide for direct placement.

For help with threading and tension, consider using a lacing needle to pull threads through the sleeves and fittings. It is not recommended to pass a lacing needle through the fitting.

Step 4: Securing Threads

Once all threads are through the post and washers and nuts are in place, pull the threading tightly with one hand and hold the fitting in the other to ensure it remains flush. The connections and threads will automatically lock in place once you release the cable.

Step 5: Fastening Washer Nuts

To complete the threading, use a wrench to fasten the washer nuts to the post and secure the fittings. Tighten the washer nuts until there is no remaining flex in the cable. It’s worth noting that you may need to use pliers to hold the terminals in place while fastening the washer nuts.

Properly installing cable rail fittings is necessary regardless of location and purpose. The safety and viability of the railing will play a significant role in usage.
